Abstract

Banking 4.0 maturity model: proposal and assessment according to expert opinion

Objective: this paper aims to propose and enhance a Maturity Assessment Model (MM) for Banking 4.0 (B4.0).

Methods: this research employed an in-depth exploratory literature review due to the absence of maturity models addressing Bank 4.0. To construct the evaluation model, a four-step maturity model development procedure was implemented: (1) problem definition, (2) comparison with existing maturity models, (3) determination of the development strategy, and (4) interactive development. The resulting model was then evaluated by subject matter experts.

Originality: the proposed model and its evaluation constitute a significant contribution to the literature due to their novel focus on Bank 4.0.

Results: Drawing on a comprehensive literature review of Bank 4.0 (B4.0) and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) maturity models, this study proposes a model comprising five dimensions: Technology, Customer, People and Culture, Strategy and Leadership, and Governance. The model includes four maturity levels (Initial, Managed, Integrated, Digitally Oriented) and 42 specific maturity items. To implement the model, the bank's performance and the relative importance of each maturity item must be assessed to calculate overall maturity. Subject matter experts evaluated the model's structure according to maturity model theory.

Contributions: The maturity model provides a structured framework for bank managers to assess organizational status and guide progression in Bank 4.0 initiatives.

Keywords: Industry 4.0. Banking 4.0. Maturity Assessment Models.
