Abstract

Objective: To identify and analyse how the literature addresses the use of digital technologies from Industry 4.0 in the context of football, mapping the main technologies adopted, identifying the most impacted areas, the perceived benefits and challenges regarding adoption, and suggestions for future trends.

Methodology/procedures: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted by identifying relevant studies indexed in the Scopus database using a structured search string. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were previously defined, following PRISMA guidelines.

Originality/Relevance: This study fills a gap in literature by consolidating evidence on the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies specifically in the context of football, an emerging and still underexplored topic in the fields of sports management and digital transformation.

Main results: The results showed a growth in publications on this topic between 2021 and 2024. The most cited technologies were Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data, which mainly impacted data analysis, scouting, financial, administrative, and athlete management. The main benefits were improvements in decision-making, operational cost optimisation, and fan engagement. The main barriers to adoption were cultural resistance to change and high implementation costs.

Theoretical/methodological contributions: The SLR provides a foundation for future research and highlights the need for more empirical studies applied to football clubs.
