Abstract

Objective of the study: To identify whether the level of corruption in countries linked to sustainable innovation influences the level of sustainable practices.

Methodology/approach: This study employs a quantitative approach, using secondary data from various sources, including Flash Eurobarometer 486 (2020) and the World Bank (2022), to analyze 16,165 thousand companies from 34 countries on the European continent, through multilevel regression analysis, using SPSS software version 26.0.

Originality/relevance: Given the findings, it is clear that policies and strategies to reduce corruption, strengthen public and private institutions and invest in sustainable practices are important to foster sustainable business strategies, promote competitive advantages and environmental and social improvements.

Main results: The study suggests that sustainable practices are influenced by both corruption and sustainable innovations, with corruption acting as an impediment to sustainable practices while innovation positively influences their implementation.

Theoretical/methodological contributions: This study presents a new approach to analyze the relationship between corruption, innovation and sustainable practices in Europe across different countries and companies, based on empirical foundations.

Keywords: Corruption; Sustainable innovation; Sustainable practices.
