Assessment of the environmental and economic cooperation of the brics countries in global value chains

This article considers the complex relationship between the BRICS and the challenges associated with global warming and environmental degradation. The study aims to analyze the environmental performance and economic dynamics of the BRICS countries in the context of their participation in global value chains with a particular emphasis on their strategies for decarbonization and sustainable development. Research methods include a comprehensive review of the existing literature and analysis of statistical data and case studies of the BRICS total resources. The authors consider the possibilities of interaction between the BRICS in the development of renewable energy sources to decarbonize global value chains and strengthen the negotiating position of these countries when discussing the transboundary carbon regulation introduced by developed economies. It is shown that the BRICS countries (except for Russia), on the one hand, have higher incentives for the decarbonization of global value chains due to the relatively large expected economic damage from global warming. On the other hand, these incentives are negatively affected by a relatively low level of economic development. The hypothesis is that these incentives are higher if negative environmental externalities are local to the country.
